چکیده

The mission of animators is to create nuanced, high-quality character motions. To achieve this, the careful editing of animation curves—curves that determine how a series of keyframed poses are interpolated over time—is an important task. Manual editing affords full and precise control, but requires tedious and nonintuitive trials and errors. Numerical optimization can automate such exploration; however, automatic solutions cannot always be perfect, and it is difficult for animators to control optimization owing to its black-box behavior. In this paper, we present a new framework called optimization-guided motion editing, which is aimed at maintaining a sense of full control while utilizing the power of optimization. We have designed interactions and developed a set of mathematical formulations to enable them. We discuss the framework’s potential by demonstrating several usage scenarios with our proof-of-concept system, named OptiMo. ACM Classification

Puppetry-inspired animation: A midair hand gestures manipulation for 3D character animation

Bringing together keyframe and motion-timing can be very difficult to control especially when manipulating body parts of a character animation. Both seem are ‘detach’ in their event as keyframe is physically visible, while timing is imperceptible and merely appears as substance of a sequence of keyframes. This paper presents an overview of my doctoral research, which focuses on an approach to c...

A Real Time Anatomical Converter For Human Motion Capture*

There are many possible ways of identifying the posture of a human character from a set of known positions. These methods differ in subtle but important ways. We propose an alternative method to the jacobian-based Inverse Kinematics, one which allows for simple calibration, allows for sensors slippage, and can take advantage of knowledge of the type of motion being performed. This approach give...

Wavelet based Keyframe Extraction Method from Motion Capture Data

This research extracts keyframes from Motion capture data. Accurate selection of keyframes is a key point in motion synthesizing, editing, retargeting and motion data compression. Our method firstly represents every joint curve with a simple numeric sequence based on wavelet transformation. Then the correlation between curves is calculated based on these numeric sequences. Several curves which ...

Character contact re-positioning under large environment deformation

Character animation based on motion capture provides intrinsically plausible results, but lacks the flexibility of procedural methods. Motion editing methods partially address this limitation by adapting the animation to small deformations of the environment. We extend one such method, the so-called relationship descriptors, to tackle the issue of motion editing under large environment deformat...

Motion Transformation by Physically Based Spacetime Optimization

Automatic generation of realistic human motion has been a long-standing problem in computer graphics. This thesis introduces a novel algorithm for transforming character animation sequences that preserves essential physical properties of the motion. The algorithm maintains realism of the original motion sequence without sacrificing the full user control of the editing process. We use the spacet...
